Abstract
The research focuses on exploring traditional wallpaper patterns, interiors and colour schemes employed in Chinese restaurants. Despite the restaurant’s location in Italy, the owner aims to infuse authentic Chinese cultural elements into the urban setting, creating a restaurant with a unique and cartoony style.
About the location
Latina is a city about 70 km southeast of Rome in the Lazio region of central Italy. It was founded in 1932 as a part of the urbanisation and land reclamation initiatives of the fascist administration. Reflecting the design philosophies of the era, Latina is known for its rationalist and fascist architecture. The grid-patterned city layout has open areas and large spaces.

This research explores the wall art within traditional Chinese restaurants, which serves as a captivating reflection of China’s opulent cultural and artistic heritage. These artworks seamlessly incorporate timeless symbols such as dragons, phoenixes, koi fish, lotus flowers, and bamboo, each imbued with profound cultural significance that elevates the overall aesthetic appeal.
The colours in Chinese restaurant design pay homage to the country’s cultural traditions. Red, symbolising good luck, is a popular choice, accentuating walls and décor for a harmonious visual experience. Gold, black, and white complement this palette, enhancing the restaurant’s authentic cultural atmosphere. However, the client chose a grey colour for the walls to create a more modern look.
