The introduction of cashierless stores has caused a fundamental change in the retail experience in recent years. Just imagine; you walk into a shop and get what you want and then, you leave without even thinking about having to wait in queue to pay for your purchases. We are entering the era of cashierless businesses, where technology is changing the way that people shop.

Customers can shop without any interruption in cashierless stores, thanks to the innovative “just walk out” technology.  This new system analyses data in real-time with artificial intelligence (AI), deep learning, computer vision, and robust computing power.

According to a study, the average wait time for customers in major metropolitan areas is around five minutes. That means you could potentially reclaim around seven hours of your life annually, given that you visit the grocery shop an average of 1.6 times a week. The concept of being able to leave a store without needing to get your wallet, empty and refill the cart, or wait for others to do the same thing, has completely revolutionised the grocery store shopping experience. In theory, self-checkout lanes have helped ease the checkout process, however, finding some items such as vegetables and pastries can also take time.

How does it work?

As customers approach, the store’s app uses geofencing to send them targeted text notifications about fresh items and special deals. The user is provided with an engaging and highly relevant shopping experience by these notifications which are created from past searches and purchases.
Shoppers walk through an access control where they scan a QR code or swipe a credit card for entry. The smart technology follows consumers’ movements around the store using a network of cameras and weight sensors. This involves on-site PCs/Servers managing sensor control and communicating with cloud services for AI-based video analysis. When a customer picks up and places an item in their cart, the system links the shopper session with the specific shelf item, facilitating correct customer charges. When a customer ends their shopping session through the access control, the system starts processing payments right away.

Designing a space with this new experience

Make shopping easy and enjoyable with a seamless experience that adapts to user needs. The shelves and islands are designed to work well with cashierless systems, ensuring the space stays functional and looks great as technology advances. The interfaces are smooth, blending into the surroundings and feeling natural and easy to use. Touchpoints are carefully placed to make sure customers using the cashierless system have a comfortable and straightforward experience. Plus, the design follows environmental guidelines by using eco-friendly materials and energy-saving techniques. This combines ecological responsibility with the latest cashierless technology for a truly modern and progressive shopping experience.
